Here's my attempt at the Chana Masala recipe from Isa Chandra Moskowitz's Post Punk Vegan Kitchen (which is a great blog, by the way!)
Her dish looks wayyyy better than mine, richer and more vibrant. Granted, I was using up some less-than-stellar tomatoes and didn't have enough cilantro for garnish. I enjoyed this dish, though the overall result was a bit more bland than I anticipated. Probably because our Indian spices are several years (too) old. (I really need to invest in more, they're just spendy!) I did get to use the sample of coconut oil my mom had sent over some time ago and it was very tasty in this dish and a pleasure to use. I even got a dab on my finger and then decided to put it on as some lip balm ;-p

I love this dish. I've never tried this version. I'd probably leave out the coconut oil because I'm not a coconut fan, but otherwise it looks scrumptious.
ReplyDeleteYes, spices are worth buying as the old ones' flavors (and nutrients, I assume) fade.
The photo is fine! Makes the food look really enticing.
Thanks, Lisa! I appreciate the support ;-)
ReplyDeleteAnd, yeah, we do need to invest in new spices. I just don't cook with them that often so it's hard to drop that chunk of change at the store for something rarely used, but if I find more recipes like this I will definitely need them! Mmm, mmm!
Kathryn, maybe we should "go-in" on some Indian spices together - split the cost and the spice ;)
ReplyDeleteOh, yeah, Annie! That's a great idea.
ReplyDeleteLooks great Kathryn! I love this kind of dish and I agree about the spices, they're not really that expensive especially if you buy them in an Asian market or in slightly larger quantities. When you buy those little glass jars of spices in the supermarket it costs twice as much for a fraction of the quantity.
